From February to November 2025, Outer Space will support and present new exhibitions from this callout, as well as invited projects in our main gallery at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, Meanjin/Brisbane.

About OS

Outer Space is contemporary arts organisation that collaborates with emerging, early and mid-career artists and arts workers to present critically engaged, experimental practices in a supportive, professional environment. Since it was founded in 2016, Outer Space has fast become a leading platform in the australian visual arts sector, providing a range of opportunities and resources for the development of artists, writers, curators, artsworkers and the communities around them.

Purpose

Our exhibitions, especially in the main gallery, present significant and exploratory new opportunities for artists—vital links between where they are, and where they’re going. You’ll work closely with the OS team towards the commissioning of new work with artistic, curatorial, logistical, and moral support.

Applications will be assessed by Outer Space's Programming Committee (made up of the Outer Space Director, Exhibitions Assistant, two Outer Space board members, and an external advisor/artist) with the following criteria:

✦ New, ambitious, and timely work

We are looking for work that has not been exhibited previously, or that is significantly varied from previous work, and that is ambitious both within the artist's own practice and in a wider contemporary art context. Timely works are those that respond to, interact with, or provide commentary on contemporary issues such as ecological, social, cultural, economic conditions etc.

✦ Quality of the applicant's previous work

Give us context of how your proposed work for this project relates to the ideas, themes or work of your broader practice.

✦ Potential for this opportunity to extend the artist's practice.

We consider the impact this exhibition opportunity may have for each artist and aim to support artists approaching a pivotal point in their practice.

✦ Overall contribution to diversity in Outer Space programming

We consider all individual proposals within the context of the entire year’s program to ensure diversity of perspectives, practices, mediums and concepts within the works shown.

✦ Suitability of proposal to the opportunity

We are looking for proposals that are considerate of the main gallery space and respond to the unique propositions of the infrastructure (i.e. street-facing windows, high ceilings and central beams etc).

Frequently Asked Q’s

-

Things you should absolutely know before applying!
  • This callout is for our main gallery which is located on the corner of Brunswick and Berwick Street, Fortitude Valley. An annotated gallery floor plan and images of the space are available for download here.

  • The opportunity is open to emerging, early and mid-career australian-based artists. While Outer Space’s focus is on supporting queensland-based artists, we welcome all projects that expand the scope of practice australia wide. Unfortunately, undergraduate students are not eligible to apply for this program.

  • For solo exhibitions, artists will receive a $2,000 artist fee and a $1,000 production fee to cover materials, fabrication, and freight costs.

For group exhibitions, each artist will receive a $1,000 artist fee and a $500 production fee to cover materials, fabrication, and freight costs.

If a curator is involved in the exhibition, they will be paid a fee of $1,000 for their development of the exhibition, including promotional materials and artist liaison. Curators must be included in your application and cannot be added after the exhibition has been contracted.

In addition, Outer Space will commission a writer to develop an exhibition text, for which the writer will be paid a fee relative to the length of the text.

  • No, the artist is responsible for freight costs. The production fee paid to all artists can be used towards return freight.

  • Yes, curators are eligible to apply. We would encourage projects where curators work closely with 1–2 artists.

  • Yes, groups and collectives—as well as collaborative projects—are eligible to apply. We would recommend no more than 3 or 4 contributors.

  • Our gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am-5pm during exhibition periods (and closed on public holidays).

  • Due to our limited staffing capacity and facility regulations, we are unable to accommodate access to the space outside of gallery hours during install and de-install.

Once your exhibition is installed, it is absolutely able to be activated for one-off public programs, with enough time to prepare and notify facility management.

  • Our gallery is invigilated by a team of volunteers who assist with front-of-house engagement. To accommodate our volunteers, we have a desk set up for them to occupy the space and welcome visitors. The volunteer invigilation desk is a requirement within the gallery space and must be considered in the installation plan for the exhibition.

We also ask for technical instructions to be provided if your exhibition has a component that requires an additional setup or pack down process. An example of this might be instructions for the set up of AV equipment for digital work etc.

  • While the main gallery program is an opportunity first and foremost for experimental practices (with no pressure whatsoever to even have tangible 'works'), there is also capacity for works in your show to be sold. Please note that artworks sold through Outer Space will incur a commission fee.

  • Exhibition openings are organised by Outer Space and incur no cost to the exhibiting artists or curators. At our openings we operate a cash-bar, where visitors are welcome to purchase wine or beer for a small cost. Due to the requirements of the liquor licensing for our space at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, the bar setup must be in the gallery space. This is useful to consider when planning the exhibition installation.

  • The Outer Space team will be available over the course of the exhibition process to assist you in developing ideas, and with any questions that arise. They will arrange meetings to discuss the progress of your exhibition and your requirements for the installation process. During the install, our Exhibitions Assistant and Installation Assistant are onsite throughout to assist with the installation and delivery of the exhibition.

  • If you are having trouble uploading the application document, ensure the total file size is less than 10MB. Please ensure you select the option for anyone with the link to access the document. If you have any further trouble uploading the application document, please email us (admin@outerspacebrisbane.org) to let us know.

  • While not required, it is preferred that if your work includes sound, you provide a captioned or transcribed version for videos or screen-based works. If your work is visual, it is recommended that you provide an audio description that can be uploaded to the Outer Space website. If you have any questions about this, please email us at admin@outerspacebrisbane.org.

  • The gallery is right on Brunswick St, across the road from the local fire station. Regular sirens along with the constant noise of traffic all day and only a glass door to the gallery mean there's a lot of background sound, and this can be overwhelming at times. This should be considered if quietness is an integral aspect of your project.

The gallery's front face is predominantly glass, which means natural light paints the gallery throughout the day. There are no internal walls, so the space will require additional considerations to block light or darken the space.

All costs related to the installation and deinstallation of each exhibition are to come from the artists production fee.

As we are inside Judith Wright Arts Centre, we both have the support of the Centre Management team, and work hard to ensure our operations adhere to the various safety systems in place across the building. This means certain awesome-but-hazardous activities may not be allowed.

All electronics must be tested and tagged by a real electrician.
