WHAT IS DEMO?
DEMO 1/4—short for Demonstration—is the first in a series of after-hours art experiments at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, where Magandjin’s [Brisbane’s] creative pulse beats a little louder after dark. The program unfolds into the night with performances, exhibitions, and activations that invite curiosity over formality. Think of it as art without the usual edges—just space to linger, participate, and wander. One night only—three more to come. Stay late.

Reverse Garbage - DIY Carabiner Workshop
As the cool of the evening approaches, and the city hums with electric anticipation, Reverse Garbage emerges from the quiet corners of West End — a co-operative pulsing with purpose, colour, and reclaimed wonder.
Step into our night where the imagination takes spark. In this twilight workshop, the humble carabiner becomes your canvas — a clasp not just for keys or ropes, but for stories, symbols, and charms of your own making.
Guided by the hands and hearts of a worker-run collective, this is a space to tinker, to play, and to dream with your hands. Shape your own hook from salvaged treasures once destined for silence. Keep it minimal, bold and clean — or let your flair take flight with jewels, ribbon, and whimsical dazzle. Keep it simple, or make it sparkle! Your choice.
This is no ordinary workshop. It’s a moment suspended in the evening’s glow, where function meets poetry, and waste is transformed into wonder.
Reverse Garbage Queensland, since 1998, has danced to a different rhythm — breathing new life into industrial discards, championing reuse, and creating not just objects, but meaning.
Come, create, and clip into a movement that sparkles quietly beneath the surface — practical, beautiful, and absolutely alive.

Outer Space - The Riḡorabana, The Balawaia, by Dean Ansell
Outer Space presents The Riḡorabana, The Balawaia by Dean Ansell. Held within the main gallery is an immersive exhibition that explores Melanesian heritage, environmental processes, and the transmission of Indigenous knowledge through the lens of both ancestral and diasporic experiences. Weaving together familial storytelling, fieldwork, and cultural practices from Papua Niugini, the project interprets local mythologies surrounding the caves and boulders deep within the sacred mountain of Lamana Golo, where sorcerers are initiated. Centred on these sacred sites, where Ansell’s ancestors evolved, the project also connects local beliefs to natural weathering processes that mirror cultural transformation over time. Through soundscape and embodied performance, the story of the Riḡorabana and the Balawaia is told.

Institute of Modern Art - You Are Here Too, Curated by Kink
You Are Here Too presents a collection of works by contemporary Australian artists exploring queer desire and sexuality. It serves as both a celebration and a response to the groundbreaking 1992 show You Are Here at the Institute of Modern Art, which made history as Australia’s first exhibition featuring exclusively gay artists during the height of the AIDS crisis.
Thirty-three years later, this contemporary reflection examines the evolution of LGBTQI+ expression in Australia, showcasing new and existing works that present queer desire as ‘amorphous, fluid, temporal, retreating, explicit, abstracted and political.’ Featured artists include Holly Bates, Nick Breedon, Alexis Kanatsios, Gian Manik, and Yangamini, with performances by Leen Rieth, Crystal Love, and others.
The show has been curated by the Kink collective, adjunct curators at the Institute of Modern Art. It emphasises First Nations and trans experiences as central to the exhibition, noting that they can’t be contained by the same narratives that dominated queer history and culture in previous generations. The exhibition is complemented by a film and video program.
