EDIT-ism is an exhibition curated by Studio 26 and features the works of six artists from the Sunshine Coast who create works that embody the concept of EDIT-ism. To edit means to assemble, to cut, rearrange, alter, adapt, or refine, to direct, delete, or to modify – in order to bring about conformity to a standard, or to suit a particular purpose.

EDIT-ism proposes the regular use of the ability of editing, enhancing the way to revisit usualities, altering current qualities and state in response to a particular purpose, collapsing the interpersonal space between author and subject, space and object. Studio 26 has purposed the concept of EDIT-ism to denote the practice of editing, which runs parallel in the work of artists Michael Ciavarella, Jasmin Coleman, Petalia Humphreys, Jaime Kiss, Carole Roberts and June Sartracom.

By virtue of location Studio 26 has gathered an ensemble of artists who share diverse exhibition experience, including early career artists and established professional artists. EDIT-ism showcases new, contemporary ways that Sunshine Coast artists are engaging with non-objective and reductive practices.

Studio 26 is a collaborative curatorial project by Sunshine Coast artists Petalia Humphreys and Jaime Kiss. We are artists that appreciate matter as a mental manifestation, interested in objects that act as impulses for the way reality could look, not just how it appears. At the core of Studio 26 is the desire to create opportunity to engage in critical conversations about contemporary reductive, geometric, non-objective art practices. EDIT-ism acts as a culmination of Studio 26’s inaugural 2022 season.

Jasmin Coleman is an interdisciplinary artist whose works span across sculpture, installation and video and photography. More recently Coleman’s conceptual and formal interests are less about making formal refined objects, and more about exploring what is already present in the world (or landscape) and suitable for poetic play. For Coleman this likely involves working with readymade objects that are site and project and /or exhibition responsive. Creative process, including research and collaboration are where the value of creative experience lives for Coleman.

Jasmin Coleman lives both on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane. Coleman holds a Bachelor of Art, Visual Art. For the last several years she has been concentrating on her role as a Visual Arts Specialist for Access Arts (building and facilitating accessible visual arts programs, events and collaborations). Coleman's exhibition history includes SNO Contemporary Arts Projects, Firstdraft, Felt Space, Metro Arts, Seventh Gallery and G3 Arts Space.

Petalia Humphreys creates what might be considered three-dimensional paintings – reductive abstract paintings that reveal a concern for location, colour and space.  Site-responsive works reveal concern for the physical mapping of spaces, of spatial and perceptual shifts. Humphreys’ hard-edge, geometric forms encourage an interactive approach, inviting the audience to engage in playful ways, considering ways of looking, perceiving and viewing. Working with building materials, Humphreys’ practice spans from small-scale hand-crafted paintings through to large site-specific installations.

Petalia Humphreys lives and works on Gubbi Gubbi land.  Born and raised in Queensland, she graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Art, Visual Art (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) in the late 1990s.  Humphreys has worked as art educator and has exhibited at the Brisbane Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Metro Arts, and Brisbane Powerhouse.

From a contemporary perspective through constructive language, Jaime Kiss finds his artistic drive in existence and reality itself. Enlightened by science, philosophy, history of art, culture, and his own sense of curiosity to observe our time, Kiss challenges the perspectives about the world and its inhabitants, translating materiality into geometric compositions using the power of colour and simplicity. Kiss’ works provoke questions of how we perceive ourselves and the world around us to interpret reality, engaging rather than just to inform, inviting experimentation rather than just to look, but even more, to sense and change, thrive and grow.

Jaime Kiss is an artist and graphic designer based on the Sunshine Coast. Born in Brazil, Kiss graduated from UNESP - São Paulo with a Bachelor of Visual Arts - Graphic Design. Moving to London, Kiss has exhibited and curated exhibitions across Europe and UK, extending his studies at University of Arts London.

Carole Roberts lives on Gubbi Gubbi land on the Sunshine Coast. Her artworks traverse the fine line between the material & the immaterial. It is her aim to create sites of stillness for the viewer. Roberts’ focus is on the formlessness within form. She has worked with various materials including paint, wood, steel and lead; the latter medium transmuted into her painted gold artworks in 2006.

As an art educator Roberts has lectured at university level and is currently a mentor and artist with Studio 26 Art. Roberts has exhibited at Noosa Regional Gallery, Bellas Gallery, IMA, The Cross Art Projects, Mori Gallery, in Sydney & George Paton Gallery and Store 5 in Melbourne. She holds a M.A. Public Art & Design from Chelsea College of Art & Design, UK, a B.A. Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, and Art Certificate from East Sydney Technical College.

June Sartracom’s practice investigates the interplay of light, space and perception.

Through reductive, white monochromatic relief paintings and drawings Sartracom explores the illusionary, allusionary and physical ideas of space. Dynamic lines and tilted shapes are used to imbue a sense of movement, not just of the forms but also of the medium. The  manipulation of surface and the quiet of the monochrome invite a quiet contemplative encounter with the viewer.

Often hung in one of many possible modular formations, Satracom’s works collectively allude to perceptual forms that pays homage to the square. The shape from which all other shapes are said to be derived. Sartracom has exhibited at Factory 49, William Wright Project Space, Annandale Gallery and Noosa Regional Gallery. June is currently based in the Sunshine Coast QLD.
