Opening Reception: 16 August 2019 6 - 9pmIn Movement At The Edge, Mandy Quadrio is talking about movement and more specifically, the movement of forced transportation. Three vessels speak to Quadrio’s palawa history and the forced transportation of family members. While historically family members were pushed to the edge literally and metaphorically, Quadrio now addresses the vulnerable edge of racism’s tipping points. These vessels pose the questions of who or what is being shipped in, shipped out or shipped away?
As a proud palawa woman whose Country is the Coastal Plains Nation and the Oyster Bay Nation of Northern and Eastern Tasmania, Mandy Quadrio’s art practice incorporates accuracies of lived historical experiences of her palawa people. She employs sculpture, photography and mixed-media to assert a living and dynamic culture. Quadrio has had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Modern Art Belltower Gallery in Brisbane, Firstdraft in Sydney and Metro Arts in Brisbane. She has also shown at Space Gallery in Sydney and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). She will be represented in the Hobiennale, Hobart in 2019. Quadrio is currently a Doctoral candidate at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane.
