SUPERCUT x BYWAY Collective
26 October - 23 November 2022
Oblique Heuristics
Oblique Heuristics is a new work by BYWAY Collective which interrogates place and culture. As Australians and migrants, we draw on our unique perspective of culture and identity to question the rules that define what is ‘Australian’ and our place within it. Our intention is to investigate the culture we are a part of, consume and propagate, and ultimately trigger incremental change.
Collaboratively curated prompts are utilised to subvert day to day routines and context in which people transit the surrounding landscape. These prompts are informed by our own experiences and used as catalysts for passersby to question not only their role in society as individuals, but their place in it and relationship to others.
Through this work, we hope to connect with passersby and prompt discussions of what it is to be a part of this culture, why and where people see themselves, to ultimately trigger a more considered approach to our roles as humans and citizens.

BYWAY is an artist collective based on Kombumerri Country / Gold Coast. BYWAY was established upon the shared histories and experiences of three emerging artists living in regional Queensland. Our mission as culturally and linguistically diverse artists, is to shift the perspective of Australia as one constructed culture and identity. Working collaboratively within a lens-based and digital practice, our goal is to engage communities and create a platform for highlighting marginalised and under-represented voices.
BYWAY is the collaborative practice of Buzz Gardiner, Ellamay Fitzgerald & Jorge Serra.
