Dancing with the Brolga
I remember my Grandmother being a fan of the ballet, but until recently I never really understood why. It wasn’t until I was told about how she loved Swan Lake and the connection to her childhood. There was a lagoon not far from where she lived at Tantitha Station, North Bundaberg. This was a place they were told to go and play if police were nearby, for fear of being stolen and sent to a mission. At this lagoon my Grandma had fond memories of the beautiful trees, white sand and clean water with abundant wildlife. But there was one bird that captured her affection. The Brolga. She loved the way they would dance and sing. Hence the reason she loved the ballet. This lagoon no longer exists as it’s buried under cane fields. The best I can do as an artist is to bring these memories back to life and share them. As they have been shared with me – so the old peoples stories will not be lost.

Dylan Sarra is a Gooreng Gooreng/Taribelang artist from the Central Queensland region and currently lives in Brisbane, Australia. With a main focus on exploring identity and place, Sarra uses a range of disciplines such as print, digital works and sculpture to gently persuade an audience into humanising the Indigenous experience. He is involved in research and development of cultural knowledge and practice, that in turn can be shared with the wider community from where these stories take place. It is his aim that all people can not only can be intrigued by indigenous culture, but they can also start to appreciate the role we all play in acknowledging First Nations people.
