The artwork The First Middens reflects on the shell middens that were prominent at the mouth of the Maroochy River, the beautiful river flowing through the middle and then Middens depicted on both sides of the river with the dots depicting the footsteps my Ancestors walked as they placed each shell and remnants of huge saltwater gatherings a feasts the Kabi Kabi people hosted along the shores.

Zartisha Davis is a proud Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi Artist living and working on Country, her songlines also include belonging to the Cobble Cobble People of the Barunggam Nation and on her fathers side belonging to the Butchulla people from K’Gari and connections to the South Sea Islands New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Zartisha is a current finalist in the Sunshine Coast National Art prize and the Macquarie Group Emerging Art Prize and has previously been shortlisted in the Caloundra Local Contemporary Art prize earlier this year and last year in the Yepang Emerging Art Prize. Zartisha’s artwork often depicts stories of her country, tribe and saltwater stories like the shell middens and earlier this year at Lantana Art space has a successful showing of her body of work Kabi Saltwater Stories-Shell Middens.
