These works homage to the moon. Orbs cast shadows and create vacuums, and the consistent presence of a horizon line deals with notions of universal balance. Finger-blending loose pigments into hyper-real landscapes and objects allows Karina to bring form to unseen but felt energies of the earth. Symbols like draped fabric, moons and vessels are in conversation with feminist and transcendental artists of the previous century, like Georgia O’Keefe, Agnes Pelton and Louise Bourgeois. Through saturated colour, Karina hopes to bring a sense of both solace and elation to viewers.

Karina Seljak is an emerging drawing and textiles artist based on Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi Country (Sunshine Coast) whose colour-drenched soft pastel drawings are an investigation of temporality and transcendence. Bringing such notions into the material realm, Karina also employs patchwork and hand-stitching to create soft sculptures and installations that challenge socio-political paradigms in pursuit of equality and resilience. As Co-founder & Director of the late Seljak Brand for 9 years, she translates her ideas about earth rhythms and natural phenomena into recycled closed-loop blanket designs. She also educates about circular economy and design approaches, currently running Visible Repair workshops through Artisan Queensland. In 2019, Karina received The Design Files Sustainable Design Award and in 2021, the QUT Outstanding Young Alumni of the Year Award. Karina is currently working toward opening her first solo show at Cool Art Gallery in Coolum Beach this August.
