I made these paintings over two months while staying in a derelict industrial park in Barreiro, Portugal. Surrounded by skeletons of abandoned buildings and evidence of new energies within the landscape, I wanted to create paintings in which the past and future overlap. Amy-Jean Mitchell is an emerging visual artist based in Meanjin, Brisbane. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2020 she has exhibited in group shows and recently completed her first creative residency at PADA Studios in Lisbon, Portugal. Amy-Jean moves between abstract and representational styles of painting and plays with the intersections between drawing and painting. She loosely depicts images that hold memories and personal anecdotes while also maintaining an improvisational and expressive engagement with painting.
