Pull
oil paper and rope on wood
52x42cm
Pull is a small scale work that show the vibrancy, movement, and fluidity of oil paint. The solid ceramic pieces and rope juxtapose the free flowing paint making the physicality of the work prominent. Living with a chronic autoimmune disease triggered by stress Odessa uses the haptic making process of layering paint as a tool to self-regulate. Her mind and body are present whilst playfully experimenting with the colour combinations and attaching objects.

Sunshine Coast based artist Odessa Mahony -de Vries, is propelled by the materiality of paint and colour, channeling them into an active exploration of process. Odessa works quickly and engages in immediate responses, navigating the interplay of painterly gestures and dynamic compositions to find resolve. She creates boundaries within the canvas, but later dismantles them by extending the paint and blurring lines. Working with canvas, clay, and paper she disregards the illusion of 2D and 3D objects by adorning paintings with ceramic tiles and textured pieces.
Odessa has a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree with a major in Painting from RMIT. Her exhibitions include "Betwixt" at Webb Gallery Queensland College of Art Brisbane in 2021, "PAINT" at Noosa Regional Gallery in 2022, and a solo exhibition titled "North of the Silver Phoenix" at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts 2024.
